Who are your roommate?

Being in a foreing country can be pleaseant or terrible. Depends on the several things. One of those things are your roommates. Who they are? Where they from? How its their behavior?

Well, I`ll tell about my roommates.
In the first place, I`m luck because I have good roommates.

I begin speaking about Luiz:

Luiz:
Luiz is brazilian, like me. He is very calm, quiet. He are leaving next saturday, so he decided enjoy as much as possible his last week with his friends. So, we can`t see him at home so often this week. He works programming computers. He loves video game. We played a few times together. I usually win... But he is getting better.

Evan:
Evan is taiwaneese. Very kind person. He is an eletric engineer. In fact, with only 25 years old, he already ger his master degree. So... probally he is a genius but also very modest.

Barak:
Barak is from Turkey, he is new. We don`t know much about him. He is a tall and fat guy. Seems like he is 25 years old... but he is only 19 years old. He has many friends and at least one relative in Vancouver and spend almost all day outside.

Borrh:
Borrh is from Kazakhstan. He is 23 years old. We make the same birthday (yesterday)! He is very funny! He Drinks a lot even being a muslim! His culture is very different of mine. He can`t talk with married women alone. He told me he feel unconfortable talking with our homestay mother, he only say `hi` or `hello`. Nothing more. In his county many weddings are agreed between the two families. He told me love is not so important. However, if a Kazakh are rich, he can get usually until 4 wives, and its not uncomom even more! WOW! Another thing... It`s not so often, but he also can BUY a wife and it`s expensive like 50,000 dollars. If something bad happen with that wife, he can get REFOUND! So different! I spended hours talking with him... its really interesting!

How about your roommates?

Multiculturalism Vs. `Mixculturalism`

In my early days in Vancouver, I could understand what is multiculturalism. I had a different concept of it. In my thoughts my home country was a multicultural place. Brazil, received lots of immigrants throughout its history. The portugueses settlers first met the indians and then brought african slaves from many different nations. After that, especially in the XIX century, many europeans and asians imigrated to Brazil. Especially, germans, italians and japaneses. Which means, many different cultures living peacefully together in the same place. Well... for me that was mulitculturalism, a culture made up of many other cultures, however, I changed my mind after a few days here.

Vancouver is completely different. If you walk on the streets you probally will hear a hundred of different languages. If you take a public transport english is the last language you will hear. Actually, is pretty hard find a `trully` canadian here!

I think there is two main differences between immigration in Brazil and in Canada. The first one is: that phenomenon is older in Brazil than in Canada. The second one is very curious for me... Seems like here those different cultures are like an archipelago: Many different islands without any connection between then. All islands are near by... are in the same place, but, if you want to go to another island, you need to take a boat. Although the other island can be friendlly, is not YOUR island. Each culture has its own place, its own border. Those cultures are well preserved. Here you can easily distinguish who is canadian and who is not. Maybe by
physical characteristics, maybe by their habits.

In my home country is different. We have many immigrants but everything is mixed. Races, colours, cultures, music. In a few years an immigrant feel itself more brazilian than foreing. And brazilians will get something of that foreing culture too. The next generation, children of immigrants, can`t be characterized as a different. They will be recognized as `trully` Brazilians. So, we have only one culture with thousands of differents influences.

I concluded that in Brazil we don`t have a trully multicultarism, what we have is `mixculturalism`. Canada has the real multiculturalism which means (for me) many different cultures living together but all well preserved. I`m asking myself right now the reason of that. Could be a young immigration, and with more time those cultures begins to mix, as a next step; or, could be, in fact, a matter of culture, and stand in this way forever. Who knows?!

What you think?

What is 'Saudade'?

Did already heard that word? `Saudade`? What is `Saudade`?
Well, first of all, saudade is a portuguese word, its a noun for a feeling. Many people say only the portuguese language named that feeling. I don`t know if its true since I can`t speak all languages in the world. Though I`m pretty sure english don`t have such word.

Saudade is a good feeling, but also a bad feeling. You feel saudade when you like someone, or something, or someplace and you are deeply missing what you like, you are far away from who or what you love. It`s good, because you only can feel saudade when you love something, when you are linked to who, or what you love.

However, saudade sometime can be cruel. You feel yourself powerless. You can`t reach who or what you love. It`s not uncommon people feeling depressed when they feel a strong `saudade`.

In fact, in Brazil`s history many african slaves died of `saudades`of their lands and friends in Africa. That extremely case they called `Bantu`. That`s an African word. Dying of a feeling. Poetic but real. Probally, that`s the reason why brazilians suffering from a strong `saudade` say: "Estou morrendo de saudades" translating: "I am dying of saudades".

When we feel saudade?

When we are far from our country, far from our family, far from our friends, etc. When, for some reason, we can`t be in touch with who we really like or love. When we miss our own food, our own way of life, our culture.

Maybe you don`t have a word similar to `saudade` in your language, but even if you don`t have such word, I`m sure you know that feeling.

And how about you? Here in Canada, do you have `saudade` of something?
